Story

The hypnotherapist sees how Vera removes the trappings of civilized behavior. For the event she attends with André, Vera’s behavior holds up a mirror to the false authenticity, virtue signaling, and hypocrisy of her fellow entrepreneurs. References Titanic (1997). Sometimes we can all use a little help changing our behavior when we can’t do it on our own, and hypnosis is one of the most commonly used practices.

This premonition leads her to conduct a deeply moving hypnotherapy session that produces a radical, if somewhat ill-defined, change in her personality

But in some cases it can work so well that we may inadvertently end up overcompensating, leading us to act in ways that bring a whole new set of problems to contend with. Such is the case with Vera (Asta Kamma August), who uses hypnosis to try to quit smoking, a behavior she considers unhealthy and antisocial. However, Vera’s hypnotherapist (Karin de Frumerie) suspects that her patient’s reluctance to explain her reasons for seeking treatment suggests that she is there for more than just kicking the habit. And, while Vera seems to be enjoying the effects of this change, it couldn’t come at a worse time: just as Vera and her business and romantic partner, André (Herbert Nordrum), are about to pitch their new commercial venture to a select group of international investors.

So what’s going on here?

at an elite pitch fest, an event where they receive instruction from a prominent pitching coach (David Fukamachi Regnfors). During the preparations for their presentation, Vera begins to act strangely unpredictable, even erratic, towards others, including those she and André are trying to win over the most. And what, if anything, can André do to save things before everything falls apart? Writer-director Ernst De Geer’s delightfully quirky debut takes a witty and absurdist view of issues of social conformity, especially when it comes to distinguishing behavior that is gleefully playful from that which is completely unacceptable, especially in seriously serious "adult" situations.

, which punctuates this often turbulent offering

It achieves this goal through a captivating mix of hilariously dry wit and chilling drama, often leaving viewers scrambling to find out what exactly is going on. In fact, at times, the combination can be confusing enough that the audience can be uncomfortably confused about what’s happening on screen and what the director wants—that is, until the big reveal surfaces, one that exposes the source behind Vera’s strange behavior. Much of the credit for this goes to the film’s good script and its excellent cast, especially the protagonists August and Nordrum, who play off each other well and create an ironic sense of dramatic tension driven by humor. I love movies where the goal is to stick pins in god-fearing balloons and push sacred cows, and this one does as good a job of that as I’ve seen in a while.

Pass the milk and lemon, please

"Hypnosis" it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m only too happy to take more than a few good sips.
