The film’s subtitle “Folie a Deux” means “Madness of Two” in French
Story
Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, and writer-director Todd Phillips share what scared them the most when approaching the musical sequel. Plus, Gaga opens up about how she got into and stayed in her dark persona. This initially sparked speculation about Harley Quinn’s appearance in the film, which was confirmed soon after. The name Folie a Deux comes from 19th-century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret. The term was coined to refer to two or more people who share the same madness or delusion.

The jury president talks about the “people of New York” instead of Gotham City. This is because New York State is the plaintiff in a criminal trial, and this version of Gotham City is evidently located in New York State (most versions place Gotham in New Jersey). The director goes on to make a sequel that is unfortunately empty and has no character development. Phillips has outdone himself by directing a movie with exceptional cinematography/visuals that portrays every feeling and emotion he wants to tell and express. BUT, he failed to create a compelling plot. From the first part to the second, the characters in the movie usually change. Their arc goes down or tilts.
Events/obstacles come their way to change their lives
Or new characters come into their life which opens the door for more interesting events to come their way resulting in a “Folie à Deux”. In this movie, Joker/Arthur Fleck’s life doesn’t seem to change much when Gaga’s character Lee is added. Instead, the movie keeps rehashing its events by RELIEVING the past (the first Joker movie) or reacting to some of its scenes. Also, it keeps going back and forth to the same places and events within this movie. The result is an overall boring movie that is ONLY entertaining visually. This movie features two main characters in the world of Gotham, Harvey Dent, played terribly by Harry Lawtey and written even worse.
But the music choices weren’t the right ones
By the end of the movie, I felt like he was useless and being exploited for his “name” within the comic book fandom. Same goes for Lady Gaga’s Lee, who seemed like he wasn’t even in this movie. I liked how this movie uses music/songs to show that it’s an ESCAPE to our inner selves. On the other hand, his performance was well done by Gaga’s filmmaking skills or Joaquin Phoenix and Lawrence Sher.
